Living Gallery - is a title of the film by Józef Robakowski from 1975. It's a film-catalogue that documents works of selected artists. The structural principle of the film is that each artist had the same amount of time (3 min.) to present himself/herself and his/her art piece in a free manner. A novelty of the situation was a part of the director who did not present artists from his point of view, but gave them a possibility of free and boundless expression. Thus he become a person conducive for the art and the artists.
The newspaper Living Gallery appeared in 1997 together with an exhibition Living Gallery - The Progressive Art Movement of Łódź in the Zachęta Gallery (no. 0). Till now 5 issues have appeared, each one edited by different milieu. The editions was followed by the meetings of the movement members. In every issue there was an updated LIST OF THE CONDUCIVE GALLERIES AND PERSONS.
The first meeting - forum of independent venues was held in Wyspa Gallery, Gdańsk as a part of its 10 years activity anniversary in 1995. There was created a watchword: The Site of Idea - The Idea of Site. Next meeting was held in Poznań in 1998 (there were two more Living Gallery meetings in Poznań - 2001 and 2004), next one in Bydgoszcz (1999) and then in Łódź (1999). In the year 2000 the meeting was held in Gdańsk again, linked to exhibition in the CSW Łaźnia Gallery, and a debate in the Wyspa Gallery. The meeting is documented on a cd rom 33 galleries and other places in Poland (published 2004). The meeting during art faire Art Poznań in Stary Browar, 2004, in mind of many participants passes for unsuccessful. However, in edited specially on this occasion catalogue appeared photos and info notes on the independent galleries.
The last one meeting - forum of the Living Gallery movement took place in Warsaw, December 11-13, 2004. It was the biggest meeting until now. A 40 galleries and organisations presented its recent activity and ca. 100 members and followers participated, represented width range of art milieus from throughout Poland. It appeared that we are a powerful lobby!
For first time a Ministry of Culture joined to organize the meeting (also minister Dąbrowski have appeared).
The independent art movement in Poland thrives. The way of understanding and the manner of practicing the independency and alternative changes - it meant something different in the 70s under light communist regime, but something another during Martial Low in the 80s, and another in the 90s in a time of transformation of a political and economic system. Finally it means something different nowadays.
